JH Volleyball begins
Come out tonight (Sept 3) to the Veribest Gym and support the Junior High girls in their first volleyball game. They will take on the Miles Bulldogs beginning at 5:30.
Lady Falcon Volleyball
The Lady Falcons traveled to Colorado City and faced off against the Lady Wolves. Although they lost in 3 (25-15, 25-20, 25-12), there were some bright spots in the match for the Lady Falcons. Haley Humble and Katie Lankford had a few aces each. Haley, Katie and Megan Aldrich each had a kill.
Falcons fall to Longhorns

Veribest traveled to Buena Vista on August 28. Although they lost to the Longhorns, the boys played hard and learned some valuable lessons from the game. 2009-2010 Veribest Athletics
We are starting the Football and Volleyball seasons for the new school year. In football we have 24 boys suiting up and will be fielding JV and Varsity teams. All the boys are excited to play. On Friday, August 28 we will go on the road to take on Buena Vista. It should be an exciting game.
Volleyball also has JV and Varsity teams. They took on Cornerstone Christian School last night and unfortunately both squads lost, but all the girls played hard and are improving.
Junior High Athletics started on Monday and their first games will be in a couple of weeks.
The coaches for this season are:
Jim Holloway, Daniel Whetsel, Denver Bilyeu, Mary Corely and James Peralta. Please give them a warm Veribest welcome when you see them both on the athletic playing field and in the classroom.

Caldera advanced to the quarterfinals of the Abilene tournament, along with Becca Perez, in the singles competition.

Junior High Girls Take Home First Place!
The junior high Lady Falcons soared over the competition this weekend to win the District 14 Zone I championship in Eden. The girls were competitive in every event entered, and every point was needed. Veribest won the event by a slim 12 points over Eden. Congratulations to the Lady Falcons on a job well done!
The junior High Falcons dominated the running events and placed well in the field events, but fell just short of Eden in the race for the zone championship. While the Falcons settled for second place overall, the boys competed in and won a number of races. Congratulations to the Falcons.

Tennis Teams get into the Swing of Things, Johansson Dominates

Two tournaments down, and two championships for Marcus Johansson. After sweeping through the competition at Eldorado two weeks ago, last weekend, Johansson continued his dominance of small-school tennis by bringing home the gold in Santa Anna. The win capped a good performance by Veribest overall, with almost all competitors winning at least one match.
At the Eldorado tournament, Michael Valdez made it to the semi-finals before being beaten, while at the Santa Anna meet, the mixed doubles team of Emory Tucker and Mackendree Clayton won the consolation prize. Coach Bilyeau is proud of the effort of all of the players, and looks for continued success in the weeks ahead.

Falcons fall to the Hornets in first round of playoffs
Suffering a barrage of three point field goals by the opposing team, the Veribest Falcons were eliminated from the playoffs by the Lometa Hornets 80-52. The game got off to a great start for Veribest, with the Falcons scoring the first seven points of the contest. By halftime, however, the Hornets had gained the upper hand, hitting nine three pointers. Trailing 45-36 at the half, the Falcons cut the lead to five points in the middle of the third quarter on a Jarret Jones lay-up. The Hornets responded with three consecutive three pointers to regain control of the game.
Brandon Beavers was the most consistent Falcon of the night, ending the game with 15 points and 12 rebounds.
The Falcons end the year with a 21-9 overall record, their second consecutive 20 win season. Coach Nason would like to express his thanks to the players for their tremendous effort all season long, and the fans for their incredible support during district play and at the playoff game. Falcons beat Lohn, Clinch playoff berth

In their final home game of the year before a large crowd, the Veribest Falcons used a dominant third quarter to soundly defeat the Lohn Eagles 71-50. With the win, the Falcons insure themselves of a third consecutive trip to the playoffs, and the second 20 win season in the history of the program. Avenging an earlier loss to Lohn, the Falcons used timely shooting to secure the game. Leading by ten points in the middle of the third quarter, Jarret Jones knocked down two consecutive three point baskets to push the lead to 16 points. Jones finished on the night with 22 points, matched by Cheyenne Black. With point guard Camron Flavel in foul trouble for most of the night, Black not only added a scoring punch, but ran the team with efficiency. Solid play was also provided by Brandon Beavers, who played well on the defensive side of the ball, and rebounded well on both ends of the court.
Veribest has one game remaining on the season, that against Cherokee in Cherokee. The Falcons face a probable match-up with Lometa in the first round of the playoffs on Monday or Tuesday of next week. Congratulations to the Falcons on yet another great season!

Junior High Teams end the season on a high note; girls finish 3rd, boys bring home the championship

The junior high Lady Falcons defeated Richland Springs 28-21 last Saturday to take home 3rd place in the District 29 tournament. Veribest, finishing with a 10-4 overall record, beat Cherokee 42-18 in the first round before falling to Rochelle 28-21. The final game was marked by outstanding play from guard Jessie Padilla, who carried the scoring load for Veribest. Padilla scored 10 of the first 12 points for the Lady Falcons, while Jaden Sturm provided and inside force that eventually wore down Richland Springs. The victory marks a nine game improvement over last year's team- a tremendous turnaround! Congratulations to the girls for a fine season.
Meanwhile, the junior high Falcons finished the year a perfect 14-0 as they defeated Rochelle in the district championship game 37-35. Cody Hurt poured in 14 points, while Matt Valdez added 13 to the Veribest total. Another factor in the game was the play of Ethan Lankford, who scored six points including the go-ahead lay-up at the beginning of the 4th quarter. The win marks the second district championship for Veribest in the last four years. Congratulations to the boys on a memorable season!

Boys move closer to Playoffs, Lady Falcons end season with resounding win
The Lady Falcons' playoff hopes ended last night when Richland Springs narrowly defeated Cherokee by six points. That, however, did not detract from a great year capped off by a 66-35 drubbing of the Paint Rock Maidens. In last Friday's battle, Veribest soared to a halftime lead of 29-15 thanks to a 21 point outburst in the second quarter. The Lady Falcons were led by Emily Lankford, who scored 23 points, and Hayley Humble, who added 17 points. The win places Veribest's final district record at 6-6, good for 4th place. Coach Witte is proud of the team for their effort all season long, and would like to say a special thank you to the seniors.
Meanwhile, the boys inched their way closer to the playoffs with a 63-28 victory against the Indians. In the contest, Cheyenne Black led the way with 22 points, while Camron Flavel played his most consistent offensive game of the year, adding 12 points to the Falcon total. The Falcons now face Lohn in a battle for playoff positioning. Lohn shocked the Falcons earlier in the season, and now, Veribest seeks revenge at home. A win places the Falcons in the playoffs with a chance at finishing the year as the second seed behind Eden. Game time this Friday night is at 6:30. Come out and root the Falcons into the playoffs!

Falcons bounce back, Lady Falcons drop another tight one; Junior High closes season at home

At home Friday night, the Lady Falcons challenged district front-runner Rochelle all the way to the wire before falling just short of the upset 38-32. It was the second consecutive nail-biting loss for the Lady Falcons, who still maintain playoff hopes. Veribest must win its remaining two contests at Richland Springs Tuesday night, and at home against Paint Rock on Friday.
Against Rochelle, Veribest stayed in the contest by hitting big shot after big shot. Trailing by six points in the waning minutes of the third quarter, Haley Humble hit a big three, and Angela Hood hit a two point shot to pull the Lady Falcons to within two points going into the fourth quarter. Humble finished the night with 12 points. In the final stanza, Hood hit two jumpers from long range, the final one cutting the Rochelle advantage to three points with just two minutes to go. From that point on, however, the inside game of the Lady Hornets proved too much, and the Lady Falcons fell 38-32 in a great effort.
The Varsity Falcons sprinted to a 40-11 halftime lead before cruising to an easy 64-28 victory. Cheyenne Black led all scorers with 18 points, while Camron Flavel added 17 points to the cause. The win places Veribest squarely in the hunt for the playoffs, and prepares them for a showdown against Richland Springs. The Falcons are 5-3 in district play, 17-6 overall. In order to make the postseason, the Falcons need to protect the home court. The fist test of that will be this Friday night against Paint Rock.

Varsity Basketball set to Play Paint Rock
The Lady Falcons will enter Tuesday's game in Paint Rock with one goal in mind- win and stay in the hunt for a playoff spot. With an impressive victory Friday night against Richland Springs, Veribest finds itself squarely in the playoff race with a 2-3 district mark. A win will place the Lady Falcons in the third position in district, while a loss could slide the team to fifth place. Currently, Rochelle stands alone in first place, with Eden one game behind the Lady Hornets. Veribest will look for the continued solid play of post Haley Humble, who is averaging double digits in scoring during district competition, and post Emily Lankford, who played her best game against Richland Springs.
The Falcons upset Richland Springs Friday night to take over the second spot in district play behind Eden. In a one point thriller, Veribest held on to the tenuous lead by controlling the boards. Camron Flavel had his best game of the season, scoring 12 points and orchestrating the Falcon attack. Clint Holik also provided a much-needed spark, while Cheyenne Black and Jarret Jones were solid contributors. Black has the distinction of leading the team in scoring and rebounds for the season. While not a must-win game, a win in Paint Rock would help solidify the playoff chances of Veribest.
