Cardinals Win the Battle of the Birds 53-8

Veribest travelled to Hermeleigh Friday night with the goal of ending a two-game losing streak and restoring team confidence. By the end of the contest, however, Veribest limped home suffering their third loss in a row 53-8. In the first quarter, Veribest had their chances. After trailing 6-0, the Falcons mounted a drive that ended on a 4th down fumble by Miseal Romo, who had broken into open space but failed to secure the ball. The Cardinals then staged another impressive drive, ending in another score. Down 12-0, Veribest failed to move the ball-this drive ending in an interception. Hermeleigh secured control of the contest, and never looked back. Laureano Sanchez made the two standout plays for the team. With 12 seconds left in the half, Sanchez intercepted a pass that kept the game 24-0 at the break. In the third quarter, Sanchez scored the lone points for Veribest on a nine yard touchdown run. That momentum would simply not be enough. A deflated Falcon team succumbed to the Cardinals by a final of 53-8. This week, the Falcons will hope to regroup in time for the first district showdown with Santa Anna on Friday, October 10th. That game will be at Falcon Field.

Lady Falcons Push Bronte to the Limit, Fall in FIve

In their best effort of the season, The Lady Falcons played the #10 ranked Bronte Lady Longhorns down to the wire, falling in five hard-fought games. In the first district match of the season, Veribest shocked Bronte by winning the first game 25-23. Timely serving by Emily Lankford and a concerted team effort to control the net set the tone of the match from the opening point. Losing the middle two games, the Lady Falcons rallied to crush the Longhorns 25-17. In a game marked by tenacious front row attacks by the Lankford sisters and Haley Humble, and fine work on the back row by Lauren Moeller and Allie Caldera, Veribest forced a fifth game. The final game went to Bronte 15-11. While losing, the Lady Falcons gained the respect of their fans and the opposing coaches. Tonight, Veribest will travel to Miles to play the Lady Bulldogs at 6:30 pm.

Junior High Falcons Outscore the Cardinals

In front of a home crowd, the junior high Falcons soared to victory over the Hermeleigh Cardinals by a final of 38-32. In a game of momentum swings, the Cardinals busted out on top with the opening kick being returned for a touchdown. The Veribest offense then went on a seven play, three minute drive that evened the score at 6-6. After recovering a fumble, the Falcons struck again on a run by Matt Valdez. Leading 13-6, the Falcons would never trail again. However, the Cardinals continued to fight. Late in the fourth quarter, facing a 4th and long, the Cardinals connected on a 34 yard touchdown pass to pull the game to within six points. The Falcons managed to convert on a 4th down of their own with just over a minute remaining to secure their third victory of the young season. While the whole team played well, Jorge Santiago was the defensive star. Adolfo Lara and Matt Valdez were solid offensively. The highlight play was turned in by Ethan Lankford, who made a great catch on a one point conversion.

Falcons Battle Tough, Get Bit by the Bulldogs 50-37

On Friday night, the Falcons hoped to rebound from their lackluster effort against Rising Star as they travelled to Loraine to face the Bulldogs. The first half was closely contested, with both team breaking off huge plays. Misael Romo rattled off two impressive touchdown runs, while Loraine countered with a combination of runs and passes to take a 26-24 halftime lead. The third quarter, however, was dominated by the Bulldogs. The lone bright spot for the Falcons was a 32 yard pass completion to Chris Buck that set up a two yard touchdown run. The Falcons trailed by 20 points in the fourth, but cut it to 13 on a nifty halfback completion from Laureano Sanchez to Camron Flavel. The rally ended, however, when a fourth down and seven attempt by the Falcons fell short. The Falcons now seek to right the ship against Hermeleigh Friday night. The Falcons now stand at 2-2 on the year.

7th Grade Girls Bring Home the Hardware

The 7th grade junior high Lady Falcons travelled to Colorado City to play in tournament action Saturday. The girls played the host team out of the gate, and fell in two games thanks to inconsistent play. The Lady Falcons, however, rallied to win two straight matches to take the Consolation trophy. Katie Thomas and Savannah Wright led the team with clutch serves, while Nycole Ruble and Jessica Tharp were steady contributors. The 7th grade girls are currently 6-1 on the season. Congratulations Lady Falcons on your success!

Jr High Volleyball Splits in Action Versus Sterling City

On Monday night, the junior high Lady Falcons hit the road to battle the Sterling City Eagles. The seventh grade continued their winning ways, pulling out a tight contest in three games. While the entire team played well, Savannah Wright and Nicole Ruble provided steady contributions all night long. A combination of timely hitting and good serving allowed the Lady Falcons to run their record to 4-0. The 8th grade team once again found themselves in familiar territory, going the distance but losing in three games 25-6, 25-20, 25-17. The girls rallied in the second game after being overwhelmed in the first contest. Poor serving doomed the team in the third game. The most consistent player was Jordyn Bauerlein; her serves were the catalyst to the game two win. The 8th grade girls fall to 2-3 on the season. This weekend, the 7th graders will travel to Colorado City to play in tournament action. Good job, girls, and keep on improving!

Wildcats Maul Falcons 74-28

In an uninspired effort, the Veribest Falcons were 45'ed by the visiting Rising Star Wildcats Friday night. In their first match-up against a Division I opponent this year, the Falcons found themselves in the familiar position of being the underdogs. While the experts were split on who would win the contest, Rising Star stated their position on the subject early and often. After converting on a fourth and 23 on the opening drive of the game, the Wildcat offense built a 16-0 lead early in the first. Veribest responded, with a long pass reception by Camron Flavel from Cris Broz, and a five yard run by Cheyenne Black to cut the lead in half. From that point on, however, Veribest was overwhelmed defensively, failing to stop the Wildcats in their first five possessions. By halftime, the Wildcats held a 60-22 lead. Misael Romo was the most effective weapon for Veribest. Romo made two sensational runs that gave the crowd something to cheer about. The game ended in the 3rd quarter when Rising Star scored on a 43 Yard pass play to mercy rule the Falcons. Veribest looks to bounce back against Loraine on the road next Friday at 7:30 pm. Loraine is coming off of a 70-20 loss against the Wildcats of Water Valley.

Junior High Hangs Tough, Comes Up Short

The junior high Lady Falcons travelled to Bronte Saturday to play in the Bronte Tournament. Coming off of a second consecutive win at home against Lorraine, the girls were prepared for much tougher competition. In their firs game, Veribest faced top-seeded Bronte, who last year beat the Lady Falcons 25-6, 25-5. The home team, however would face a determined opponent. In three tough games, the Lady Falcons won game one 25-22, lost game two 25-21, and fell in game three 25-23. Then, with no rest, Veribest played the 8th grade team from Colorado City. In much the same fashion, the Lady Falcons won game one 25-22 but lost game two. Game three saw Veribest rally from seven points down to take a lead of 18-14. The win, ,however. eluded the team once again, as the Lady Falcons fell short 25-21. Coach Nason was very proud of the effort of the entire team, and noted the clear improvement in the play of the team. Good job, Lady Falcons in representing the school with pride!

The Lady Falcons will travel to Sterling City on Monday to continue district play. Game time for the 7th grade team is at 5:30, with 8th grade action following the conclusion of the first match.

Junior Varsity Boys put Points on the Board, Lose Close Contest

The junior varsity boys went to Rising Star on Thursday, losing a close decision 24-21. In defeat, however, there were small victories. The two game scoring drought was broken early in the contest as quarterback Clint Holik hit Dallas Martinez with a 65 yard catch and run. Emory Tucker caught a twenty yard touchdown pass, and Holik once again found his target as Dallas Martinez scored on another twenty yard touchdown completion. The game came down to a single play. Veribest scored in the closing seconds, but could not recover the onside kick. Coach Eubanks was pleased with the effort of the team, congratulating all the players for the great game. Falcons Sting the Hornets, go to 2-0

In Friday's football contest, the Veribest Falcons rallied from a halftime deficit to defeat the Novice Hornets 63-44. Playing on the road for the first time this season, the Falcons felt the pressure from the Hornets from the outset. In a first half dominated by offensive play, the Falcon defense faltered on the final series of the half, and relinquished the lead 31-29 going to the halftime break.
However, during the latter stages of the third quarter, and throughout the fourth quarter, the defense held the Hornets to just two scores, while the offense continued to churn out points. Along with Cheyenne Black and Misael Romo, once again key figures in the Falcon victory, senior Chris Buck got into the scoring act, catching a touchdown pass from Cris Broz. The Hornets fought until the end, but were simply outplayed by the Falcons. The coaches were pleased with the attitude and determination shown by the team, but continue to look for improvement next week against Rising Star. That game will be played at home beginning at 7:30 pm.

Outstanding players included Charly Holik, who dominated at the net, and Jessica Tharp, the serving ace of the squad. The 8th grade team fell just short in three games, losing the final one 25-23. The 8th grade game was marked by solid play on the part of all the girls, especially Jaden Sturm and Jordyn Bauerlein. The coaches were extremely happy with the effort of the team. Overmatched but not outfought, the Veribest Falcons JV team faced Water Valley for the second straight week on Thursday night at Veribest. The Falcons squandered a number of scoring chances, and ended up losing 47-0. However, there were some bright spots. Dallas Martinez ran hard, amassing over 100 yards on the ground, and Edgar Ramirez and Emory Tucker turned in solid performances. The boys will travel to Rising Star next week in search of their first score and their first win. The game will be played after the junior high game which begins at 5:30. Spirited Effort Falls Short, Girls Lose in Colorado City

In a highly contested match, the Veribest Lady Falcons battled to the finish but fell short against Colorado City on Tuesday night. In three close contests, that featured numerous lead and momentum changes, the Lady Falcons lost by scores of 25-19, 25-23, 25-20. The Lady Falcons were sparked by the hitting of Haley Humble, the setting of Alex Padilla, and the back row play of Miriam Fernandez. What doomed the girls were serving errors, which cost the ladies a chance to win in two of the three games. The girls will welcome Albany tonight as they play host to one of the powerhouses in small-school volleyball in the state. Game time is a 6:00pm.
