The chance for a perfect season ended for the junior high Falcons Thursday night as they tied the Steers at Robert Lee 20-20. It was a contest of equally matched teams looking for sole possession of first place in the district. Veribest took the early lead on the first drive of the game as Jon Santiago scored on a 23 yard reverse. Robert Lee answered on a four yard run late in the first quarter to tie the game at 7-7. Matt Valdez recaptured Falcon momentum as he scored from 8 yards out on a dive play. The extra point was caught by Zack Book, and at the half Veribest led 14-7. In the opening drive of the second half, Robert Lee drove the ball down the field and tied the score. Late in the 4th quarter, with under a minute to play, Veribest looked to have sealed the win with another Jon Santiago touchdown reception. With only seconds remaining, and down by six, the Steers scored on a long run to tie the game. With no time remaining, Robert Lee lined up to win the game on the extra point. They were held short of the goal line by Adolfo Lara and a host of Falcons, and the game ended 20-20
The Falcons will look to end their season as undefeated district co-champions when they play at home Thursday night against Richland Springs. Good luck to our boys!

Seniors Honored at Last Volleyball Home Game
In front of a good crowd, the 2008 volleyball Seniors were honored before the contest with Sterling City Saturday afternoon at Veribest. The three young ladies were presented with flowers and a necklace from the coaches and the Booster Club. Emily Lankford, Allie Caldera, and Angela Hood have gathered an impressive resume of achievements while at Veribest. All three will continue their education after high school. Both Emily and Angela plan to attend college, while Allie hopes to become a massage therapist and a nurse. All three young ladies are members of the National Honor Society. Emily is actively involved in the Student Council, while Allie is an active member of the FFA. Angela was this year's Homecoming queen.
The game was played at a high level of intensity, but Sterling City proved too much for the Lady Falcons. Veribest succumbed in three games, but never quit playing until the end. Lauren Moeller, Emily Lankford, and Megan Aldridge did a great job of blocking, while the back row played consistently well. Becca Perez came off the bench to give the Lady Falcons some back row support, while Haley Humble and Emily Lankford led the front row attack. The Lady Falcons will travel to Water Valley to play the Wildcats in the final game of the season Tuesday night. Veribest can knock Water Valley out of the playoffs if they can pull off the win. Take the drive to Water Valley and support the Lady Falcons!

Junior High Falcons win 7th Straight, get set for Showdown with Robert Lee

Another Thursday night, another win. The junior high Falcons played solid football from start to finish as they defeated Eden by a final of 51-19. A key play of the game came midway through the 1st quarter. With Eden driving deep into Falcon territory, Ethan Lankford intercepted a pass. The offense took four plays to reach the end zone, the final 40 yards of the drive accomplished on a nifty sweep by Matt Valdez. The Falcons used stingy defense and another Eden miscue to forge ahead 22-0. Jon Santiago made a nifty 30 yard catch from Adolfo Lara to score the third Falcon TD. From that point, the rout was on, with Eden never getting closer than 20 points. One of the most impressive aspects of the ball game was the play of the seventh graders in the 3rd and 4th quarters. Sam McCray made several nice stops, and scored on a 25 yard run. Next week, Veribest faces another junior high powerhouse, Robert Lee. The Steers have only one loss on the season, that to Rankin. Game time is at 6:00 pm in Robert Lee. Come out and support the Falcons.

In the third game, with seventh graders on the court, Sterling City stuck with their A team and struggled to beat Veribest by a final of 25-17. Falcons take the sting out of the Hornets, win Homecoming game in style

Four straight weeks of frustration ended in a big way Friday night as an inspired Falcon team dispatched the Rochelle Hornets 78-28 at Falcon Field. It was an inspired effort throughout the game. Fueled by a huge crowd, and motivated to represent their school, Veribest took control of the game in the first quarter. Laureano Sanchez, who finished the game with 225 yards rushing, capped off an impressive opening drive with a seven yard touchdown run. Chris Buck added the two point conversion, and the Falcons led 8-0. On their next possession, Veribest once again scored, this time on a Ubando five yard carry. Leading 22-14 in the second quarter, Sanchez rumbled 38 yards to stretch the margin to 30-14. Cris Broz and Chris Buck hooked up on two touchdown pass plays, while Sanchez added another score on a 46 yard run in the fourth quarter. The night ended a bit early, as Veribest 45'ed Rochelle in the final minutes of the game. Congratulations to the Falcons on their great win! Next week, Veribest goes to Eden to take on the Bulldogs in a key district match-up. Game time is a 7:30 pm.
Junior HIgh Falcons stay Perfect for the Season
Following a 40-13 win over Santa Anna last week, the junior high Falcons travelled to Rochelle Thursday night to square off against an undefeated Hornets team. After falling behind early, Veribest rallied on their first possession of the game. Jon Santiago scored on a 35 yard reverse to give Veribest a 7-6 advantage. From there, the Falcons slowly pulled away, leading at the break 20-6. Matt Valdez was the star of the night for Veribest He ended the game with four touchdowns- two rushing, one on a pass, and one on a key interception return- in the second half. While the offense did enough to win, the defensive effort was praised by the coaches. Veribest now has a record of 6-0, and will face Eden next Thursday night at home. Congratulations to the Falcons on a great season so far! Come out and support the team as they look for seven in a row.

JV boys win in Santa Anna
The JV falcons posted their third consecutive undefeated week as they beat the Mountaineers by a final of 34-28. The scoring was opened for Veribest with a touchdown pass from Clint Holik to Dallas Martinez. Jose Morales also connected with Martinez on another TD strike, and added two touchdowns of his own running the ball. Veribest built a lead in the third quarter, but had to hold on down the stretch to beat Santa Anna. Over the last three weeks the JV FAlcons have two wins, no losses, and one tie.
Junior High Lady Falcons dominate Loraine
Thirty minutes- that's the time it took for the junior high Lady Falcons to secure a volleyball victory against the Loraine Lady Bulldogs. In impressive fashion, the girls dispatched Loraine 25-7, 25-14. The first game was dominated by the Veribest serve. Eryn Nichols served six consecutive points to open the contest, while Jessie Padilla added five service points of her own. The Lady Falcons were sloppy in their play early in the second game, but settled down to take control by the middle of the contest. Consistent play was turned in by the whole squad, notably by Jessica Tharpe, Jaden Sturm, and Missy Gerisch. The seventh grade now stand at 9-2 on the year, while the 8th graders even their record at 5-5.
Lady Falcons drop match to Water Valley

In an uninspired effort, the Lady Falcons were defeated by Water Valley 25-14, 25-16, 25-9 on Saturday. Coming into the game, the Lady Falcons had the opportunity to move into playoff contention with a win. While the girls played well at times, the listless performance in every aspect of the game led to an easy win for the visiting Wildcats. A bright spot was the play of the bench players. Megan Buck had two kills in the third game, while Hannah Ferguson had two blocks. The team looks to rebound against Bronte Tuesday night. Their goal is to play the rest of the season with the same passion that was exhibited early in district play! Come out and support the team in Bronte- they need your help to upset the Lady Longhorns.
Varsity Falcons hobbled by Santa Anna
In their first district contest of the year, the Veribest Falcons were slowed by injuries and inconsistent play as they fell to the Mountaineers 53-8. After Santa Anna scored on the opening drive of the game, Veribest responded with a 5 minute drive dominated by the run. Jon Ubando hit paydirt on a three yard carry, and Chris Buck added the extra point to give the Falcons the 8-6 advantage. Santa Anna took control of the game on the kickoff, returning the kick 71 yards for a touchdown. Veribest mounted yet another drive that ended in a fumble recovery by Santa Anna. A series of miscues and injuries crippled the Falcons from that point on, along with unmotivated play. Veribest failed to rally, and as the game progressed, Santa Anna steamrolled its way to an easy 53-8 mercy-ruled win. While disappointed, the Falcons hope to rebound this week against Rochelle at Homecoming. Come out and support the Falcons as they try to even their district record at 1-1. They will do so without the services of Camron Flavel and Dan Nichols, who were injured during the game.

Lady Falcons fall in Spirited Contest
The Lady Falcon volleyball team brought energy and effort to the court against Sterling City Tuesday night. Unfortunately for Veribest, that wasn't enough as they were defeated in three straight games 25-18, 25-20, 25-17. Sterling City attacked at will, but the Lady Falcons stood up to the pressure. Using consistent team serving, Veribest stayed in the contest. By game two, the Lady Falcons began to build a strong block up front, and the Lady Falcons held a slim lead 18-17. Serve return errors and inconsistent sets plagued Veribest throughout the match, and the Lady Falcons succumbed in the end. However, what was evident from the opening serve was effort. The team played with a positive attitude that led to several bright moments. Lauren Moeller, playing with a back injury, was the all-around star of the contest. Haley Humble hit well once again, and Emily Lankford blocked well in the closing stages of the match.

Veribest Hosts Tripleheader

It was a night full of foootball Thursday at Veribest. The 7th grade game led off the action, with Veribest playing hard but falling to Water Valley by a final of 42-8. Falcon Samuel McCray was the workhorse for Veribest, but it was Collin Perkins who scored the lone Veribest points of the night on an impressive catch and run.

Scoring for the Falcons came early and often. Matt Valdez opened the scoring with a 53 yard touchdown run. Jon Santiago made the play of the game, hauling in a 34 yard touchdown strike from Adolfo Lara.
The final game
pitted the JV Falcons against the JV Eden Bulldogs. Eden built a two touchdown lead over the Falcons going into the 4th quarter, but the Falcons, led by the feet of Jose Morales, rallied to take a 36-30 lead with just over a minute remaining. The play of the game for Veribest came in the 4th quarter on a third and long inside their own ten yard line. Morales used two nice cutbacks and evaded two would-be tacklers to sprint the length of the field to give the Falcons their first lead. Eden answered back with a long touchdown pass play that took just under ten seconds. Driving once again, the Falcons were stopped short on a 4th and three, and the game ended in a tie. Dallas Martinez was once again a key contributor to the Falcon cause, picking up three big first downs during the Veribest rally. Of special note was the outstanding job of the referees in this contest.
